Alexandria Central School students, Alexandra Tillman (Senior) and Spencer Frisina (Junior), along with

Thousand Islands High School student, Michelle Goodman (Junior), and Watertown High School student, Steven

Wilson (Senior) competed in the 2011 National Academic Bowl for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students.  The team,

along with their coaches, Lois Scanlon, Teacher of the Deaf, and Barb Kohler, Sign Language Interpreter,

travelled to Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. on March 4th.  The Academic Bowl celebrated its 15th

anniversary this year by gathering teams of Deaf students from across the United States.  The competition

involved 78 teams converging on D.C. from as far away as Hawaii.  The North Country Team played against

Tennessee, California, Montana, Delaware, New Mexico and Alabama, winning two of their matches.  Students

answered questions on a wide variety of topics including math, language and literature, Social Studies, current

events, and Deaf Studies.  Following the successful conclusion of the matches, the team enjoyed a tour of

historical sites in Washington and Arlington, including a high-speed elevator ride to the top of the Washington

Monument, a visit to the Lincoln Memorial, a stop at the World War II Memorial and a walk past the White House.

The students had the opportunity to travel on the subway system, an exciting first time experience for some.

This is the third year this four member team has competed, having travelled to Long Island and Cape Cod in

previous years.  The students’ reaction to the six day experience was overwhelmingly positive.   Their favorite

activities were participating in and observing matches, the D.C. tour and socializing with other Deaf and Hard of

Hearing students at Gallaudet’s evening entertainment such as swimming, dancing and basketball.

Alexandria Central School, Thousand Islands Central School, Watertown Central School, Jefferson-Lewis

BOCES, the North Country Club of the Deaf, James Tinney,  Rotary Club of Watertown and Glenn Wagner

supported the students in their educational experience.
