CLAYTON, N.Y. — William F. “Wild Bill” Sharp, 93, died Friday, March 5, at Mercy of Northern New
York.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 13, at T. R. Jetty Funeral Home in Clayton. Calling
hours will be 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday prior to the funeral service. Spring burial will be held at
Riverside Cemetery on Wellesley Island. Following the service there will be a reception held at the
Fishers Landing Fire Department.
Born May 27, 1916, in Waterloo, the son of Charles and Mary Sharp, he was the youngest of ten
children all of whom died before him. As a young child he moved to the St. Lawrence River area. He
attended area schools,
He married Arvilla Waterson on Dec. 22, 1944. She died Sept. 3, 1979, in Alexandria Bay at age 58.
After their marriage they lived in Alexandria Bay, Wellesley Island and Fishers Landing eventually
settling in Clayton.
Mr. Sharp worked at various jobs during his life. He was a gardener at Captain Ogden on Wellesley
Island for over twenty years, a grinder at Frink’s Snow Plow for over twenty years.
He was an active member and volunteer for the Paynter Senior Center for many years and he farmed
for various people.
He enjoyed helping people and was responsible for saving more than on person’s life while delivering
meals for the Paynter Center. He was the longest member of Fishers Landing Fire Department since
joining in 1971. He received the lifetime achievement award from the Jefferson County Fire Police
Association in 2002. He was named the Fire Policeman of the year in 2006, was a member of the
Odd Fellows, the past Clayton Diving Club, and the Northern New York Club for the Deaf.
Bill loved spending time with his grandchildren often taking them fishing, riding, and exploring the
area. He always knew where to find all the exotic pets to show the children.
Surviving are a daughter and her husband, Kandy and Robert Bender, Clayton; a son and his wife,
Fred and Laura Schneider, LaFargeville; five grandchildren, Ashley Pecori, Watertown, Jesse
Bender, Hammond, Kyle, Kayla and Nicholas Schneider, all of LaFargeville; two great-grandchildren,
Jesse William Bender, Hammond, and Skyler Matthews, Watertown; nieces and nephews.
